Monthly Spread 4 ways
By Creative Planning Team Member - Robyn Dexter-Attwood
A question I have seen in several planner groups is how do you use a monthly spread? I use multiple planners so I have multiple monthly spreads so I thought I would share how I use monthly spreads in different ways.
A month at a glance:
This is probably the most common way to use a monthly spread. Having a space where you can see all the appointments, deadlines and events in one place can be helpful when trying to break down priorities as you plan during the month. Appointment labels are great for making certain things stand out within the spread and I love being able to theme it all together using the monthly sheets available in the shop. This is a small Passion Planner weekly spread using the A5 monthly core sheet so it all fits well with each other.
This is another thing I see often within planner groups – budgeting and tracking finances. I have been trying this out recently in my Daily Duo using quite a simple approach. I’ve used the lunar rainbow appointment labels to add in the planned expenditures for the month – usually with them flipped so the smaller section of the label is on the right hand side. This gives me space to record what it is and then a total amount. I have also used the lunar rainbow re-dating sheets to make it a Monday start view as this just works better for me. The combo adds a nice splash of colour and means I can then see different spending around this – the unplanned stuff being added in as the month goes on. It can also be used to track those parcels/envelopes as well!
I think this works really well on a printed monthly spread as it can easily help you identify weeks where things may not quite have gone as planned. Icon stickers are great for helping with things like meal planning or steps within the spread. I’ve used some meal icon stickers and heart icon stickers to make it easy to see some of the things I track within the month.
This is how I’ve been using my monthly spreads for a long time in my Passion Planner Medium, probably since the EBDUK gratitude challenge came into existence. There is something really pleasing about being able to look back at the good things from the month and I really enjoy using the monthly skeleton and monthly extras to give it some real colour and joy as well. While I use the gratitude prompts for the month, you could record gratitude of any kind within each day, a memory, something that made you smile, something from the family. Its your spread of happiness so you can choose what you prefer.
The joy of having a new month every 30 days or so is that you can change how you use your monthly spread and if you don’t like it, it won’t be long until you can try something else!
